For the Greater Good

Hi everyone! Tomorrow’s SAIS meeting will be a study presentation by fellow IS student, Nick Macaluso. He’ll be sharing photos and stories from his time spent this past winter break volunteering in orphanages in India. This a great opportunity for anyone interested in doing similar work in the future! Also, this presentation will serve an informative way to highlight how the India we see in the news media is not always an accurate depiction of society, culture or way of life.

Refreshments will be served, see you at 12:30 in NAC 6/293! đŸ™‚

Morocco and SAIS

This Thursday, February 23rd, SAIS will be meeting to discuss:

  1. Reminders: The Dr. Biles Challenge and T-Shirt Design Contest
  2. Promotion: the Morocco School Supply Drive (distribution of flyers)
  3. Suggestions: Feedback on future meeting topics and projects

After that, we’ll join SAIS Vice-President Dairanys and other students from both USG and SAIS in the NAC Lobby to hear more about Morocco from those who’ve been there, as well as enjoy traditional food and music.

We hope to see in our home NAC 6/293 at 12:30 to kick things off on Thursday! đŸ™‚

Election Results!

Our first meeting of the semester was a success! There was a decent size amount of people, and of those people who were in attendance; they have already shown interest in getting more involved! We covered all of the new ways of getting active in SAIS this semester, including:

  • the Events Committee
  • Decorating Crew (to help spruce up the suite)
  • T-shirt Design contest
  • Peer Advising

More details about these groups will be posted soon a new page called “Involvement,” as well as pictures from the meeting!

Last but certainly not least: congratulations are in order to the two newest SAIS officers! Former Treasurer, Dairanys Grullon-Virgil threw her hat in the Vice-President race and won! Then, following a brilliant motion by adviser Dr. Biles, it was decided that the second runner-up would automatically become the new treasurer, making Yani Labor Koroma the winner! The rest of the Executive Board shall remain the same, and we thank everyone in attendance. Not only was there good food, but a lot of great ideas where presented by fellow students.

Cheers to the new semester!

Busy Bees!

Here’s whats going on this week with the International Studies Department at a glance!

  1. Tomorrow, SAIS Treasurer Dairanys Grullon-Virgil and other IS students will be in attendance at CCNY President Lisa Coico’s Meeting November 15 at 12:30. She will be waiting outside the President’s Dining Room (NAC 3rd Floor – just inside the Faculty Dining Room), for the IS students who are interesting in attending the round table meeting. This is a great chance to saw solidarity and strength within the IS program. The petition that many of you have signed will be presented to the President at this time, but spoken to in private with more detail at another date (we do not want to bum-rush her, but bring it to her attention in a positive way).
  2. In addition, it is International Education Week! The Study Abroad Program is having an event to talk about this as well as opportunities on Thursday November 17th from 12-2 in NAC 6/293. Refreshments will be served!
  3. At that same time; Professor Biles is back again to talk in depth about the Model United Nations class that is being taught in the Spring 2012 semester. However, we will only be meeting to discuss this for a short while so SAIS can support the Study Abroad Program’s event. Also this meeting will be in NAC 1/211A at 12:30 (across from Student Life) so we can allow for the IEW event to have more space and not talk over one another. Once this SAIS meeting is over we are going to come back up the 6th floor for the IEW event!

Hope to see you around!
