This Is It – USG to Vote on the Creation of a GRC on 9/3

Gender Resource Center Campaign

Community–

The Undergraduate Student Government of City College will be voting on GRC’s ability to have space in the new building. This is crucial for our efforts and we would like to invite all supporters, allies, and organizers to support us and tell USG #WhyWeNeedGRC.

Folks who show up to the event, we’re asking you to make signs explaining why we need GRC, and to hold them up so many voices and experiences are represented as possible. This is huge! and your support is crucial to us successfully securing the space to make our campaign into a reality.

In solidarity,

The Gender Resource Center Campaign;

AF3IRM & SISTER CIRCLE COLLECTIVE CALL FOR A STRONG WOMEN’S PRESENCE, WOMEN’S VOICE AT THE MILLION PEOPLE’S MARCH

NEW YORK:   From 92-year-old Pearlie Golden, killed in Atlanta, to seven-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones, killed in Detroit, Michigan, police violence has impacted and continues to impact the lives of  black women and girls, as well as queer, trans and gender-nonconforming people.   It is time, says AF3IRM NYC and the Sister Circle Collective, to pay attention.

Under the hashtag #feministsonthemove, the two organizations are inviting women, queer, trans, and genderqueer folk, as well as allies, to help create a strong woman’s contingent for the 13th December Million People March against police brutality.  Participants are asked to gather at Washington Square North/5th Avenue at 1 pm. We are asking anyone who would like to join to wear purple as a sign of unity in this struggle.

16 Days at CCNY – 2014 Campaign

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York City – November 24, 2014

Launch of the 4th Season of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence at City College of New York

In its fourth year, students and community have come together to launch an awareness campaign that focuses on gender-based violence. Launching on November 25th, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and ending on December 10th, International Human Rights Day, the 16 Days at CCNY Committee has curated and developed eleven events for this season, both on-campus and off-campus. The calendar for these events are:

We are deeply grateful for the tireless efforts of our supporters and allies working on the 2014 Campaign: the 16 Days at CCNY Committee, the participating organizations of the Ad Hoc Committee for a Gender Resource Center, AF3IRM NYC, CONNECT NYC, Community Vision Council, CCNY The Campus, CCNY International Studies Program, CCNY Women’s Studies Program, Dr. Mzuri Hudson, The Paper, SAME TV, Sisters Health and Wellness Collective, our volunteers and friends, and last, but certainly not least, the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign Headquarters at the Center for Women’s Global Leadership of Rutgers University for all that they do.

From Ferguson to Palestine – Ayotzinapa to New York City – now more than ever we are seeing moments of state violence transforming from moments to movements. This campaign is one of many moments for us. Therefore, the ultimate goal of our campaign is to honor those in the struggle and to support the needs of the communities on campus and in Harlem. As the call for the Gender Resource Center is shouted from City Hall, to the classrooms, to the community, and back again to the City College administration building – we will continue to transform space and time and make that all voices are heard to ensure that the vital resources and healing a Gender Resource Center could provide is realized. We ask that you support these efforts throughout the months to come.

Small Class Sizes-Does it Really Matter?

Other Ways Of Teaching And Learning

On our way to the airport, my roommates and I had a conversation in the back of a cab, noting that many students were absent in our class that day. We were describing how we each had such a great day! We were able to turn our backs to the board to write and the students were quiet; our students did individual work undisturbed, and there hung in the air a hush that we call the pin dropping silence. We were also able to dictate our lessons in modal voice and the class went along smoothly. GREAT!

We thought about this for awhile. The lightbulb turned on! In our classes that day, students were missing, from ten to more than half depending on the given class. How different the classroom environment is when there are less students. The distance from my students to myself is significantly reduced as I can…
