Spring 2015 – Social Change In The Middle East

In case you missed it: a message on the “Social Change In The Middle East” course!

Dear all,

Just a reminder that IS will be offering INTL 31613, “Social Change In The Middle East”, during Spring 2015. The class meets M/W from 11:00 to 12:15. This semester we will look at what has come to be known as the “Arab Spring” and how it has affected various countries in the Middle East and North Africa. We will also look at many themes that have defined social and political change throughout the region (Gender Politics, Dissident Art, Islamism, Secular Social Movements, Infra-politics, Imperialism, etc…). The class will combine historical background of the contemporary Middle East (Post-Ottoman Empire) with analyses of current events. Additionally we will have guest speakers Skypeing in from Cairo.

“Social Change in the Middle East” counts towards the IS Major and is an ideal class for anyone interested in the region or those who want background on the Middle East.

Best,
Prof. Ludovici

Ad/PR Students Debunk The Fears of Undocumented Students

The City College of New York is a cultural melting pot. Students from all over the globe come here to obtain a higher education. Unfortunately, not all students have the same privileges available to them, primarily because of their immigration status. Fear keeps these students silenced.

Wednesday, December 3rd, students from CCNY’s Advertising and Public Relations department will be shining a light on the fears that undocumented students face in college. These students, known as Belcan & Digm, would like to welcome their fellow City College classmates to their event, “Education without Barriers: Out of the Shadows.” Joining them will be CUNY filmmaker and activist Angy Rivera, who will be presenting a special clip from her documentary, No Le Diga Nada.

The film focuses on the fear of deportation that non-U.S. citizens face, which is also the theme of the event. It will be part of a greater effort by the Colin Powell Center, which pushes for Equal Opportunity for all CCNY students, whether or not they are U.S. citizens.

Belcan & Digm have developed an entire campaign, raising awareness of the fear that a number of City College students face. Education is a right to all students. Though it may not be as easily accessible to all, City College provides some help and student rights to those who seek it.

In addition to the film clip’s screening, the event will have games, a panel and a raffle with prizes. Students will have the opportunity to hear Angy speak on the topic followed by a brief Q&A session. Take the chance to break to silence at the North Academic Center’s Hoffman Lounge from 12-2 p.m. on Wednesday December 3rd.
